The ascent to Sotira and the view from its top.
The landscape around Lefkara is magnificent. At the north, you can gaze at the hillside of the "castle", with the rugged peaks of the surrounding hills. At the foot of the mountain of Sotira lies the valley of Lefkara, amphitheatrically, with the sea of Kition at the eastern horizon. The landscape around Lefkara is magnificent. Walking in the New Road
The walk in the New Road usually starts from the Town Hall square at the tourist kiosk. The walkers go uphill to the police station and at the crossroad leading to Vavatsinia they enter the smooth, new road. This route, for a few hundred meters, has this unique feature: On your left, the tiled roofs of the village stretch as far as the eye can see. As the houses are densely built, you cannot discern streets but only balconies, terraces, verandas with arches, the windows of the upper floors and doors. Beyond the turn above the church of Agioi Anargyroi, you can see the mountain landscape of Lefkara stretching as far as Stavrovouni and the bay of Kition. In the foreground, Kato Lefkara. If you are visiting on February, the blossomed almond trees offer a unique spectacle. Look more closely and you will also see a low hill range, the hills near Kakoratzia with the big white dish of the satellite station "Makarios III". In the background, the sea in the bay of Kition reflects the sunlight or, if it is evening, the moon.
At the Lefkara dam
Walking 4 km to the north of the village, on the road to Kornos, you can find the Lefkara dam, one of the largest in Cyprus, with a capacity of about 14 cubic meters of water. In years of normal rainfall it collects up to 6 million cubic meters of water and the entire landscape brings to mind the Swiss lakes or the Norwegian fjords.
In its waters you can fish (upon permission from the fishing department) trout or carp and in the surrounding hills you can look for "matsikorida" (narcissus) and "mirofora" (lavender). On Clean Monday, hundreds of people come up here to "cut the moutti (nose) of Lent".
Route from Pigi to Kato Lefkara
At the lowest point of the village, in the southeast, is the famous "Pii", namely Pigi, which owes its name to a natural spring with running water all year long.
From Pigi starts a downhill paved road that leads to the twin village of Kato Lefkara. The visitor needs to walk only 1 km to get there, enjoying at the same time the natural scenery that, particularly in spring, is extremely green with all sorts of flowers. Blooming almond trees in February and blooming apricot trees in April give a unique note to the landscape.
At the entrance of the village is the chapel of Agios Timotheos and down the same road the chapel of Archangel Michael with frescoes decorating its inside, both exquisite examples of Byzantine architecture. It is believed that here was the seat of the Bishop of Amathus, one of the Orthodox Bishops who were forced by the Franks to give up their seat.
Route from Livadiotissa to Agia Marina
Going downhill to the north, to the road leading to Kornos and taking the path at the end of the village, within 20 minutes you will reach the Byzantine chapel of Panagia Livadiotissa, from where you can enjoy excellent views and drink the refreshingly light and cool running water of its spring. Several centenarian olive trees, the so-called "fragkoelies" because they were planted during the Frankish occupation, throw their shadow on the meadow next to the chapel. It is an ideal place for excursions and kite flying, especially on Clean Monday.Going downhill to the north, to the road leading to Kornos and taking the path at the end of the village, within 20 minutes you will reach the Byzantine chapel of Panagia Livadiotissa, from where you can enjoy excellent views and drink the refreshingly light and cool running water of its spring. From here you can see below the obelisk called Kourvellos, a huge rock of 40 meters height that resembles Meteora and which will certainly be of great interest to geologists. Five minutes to the west is the chapel of Agia Marina with running water and great views of the North.
Walking in "Kampos" on the road to Varvatsinia
One of the most beautiful walks around Lefkara is the walk on the straight road towards Vavatsinia, from the crossroad with the monument of the fallen until the tavern "H Drosia tis Marias".One of the most beautiful walks around Lefkara is the walk on the straight road towards Vavatsinia, from the crossroad with the monument of the fallen until the tavern "H Drosia tis Marias".
The area is known by the toponym "kampos" because it is "isiotopi" (flat) with plots on both sides of the road, all of them mostly flat. Especially at the end of January or at the beginning of February, when the almond trees are blooming, the landscape is enchanting. But even later on, when the apricot tees are blooming, it is equally enticing. New homes following the standards of local folk architecture are built at the entire length of the route.
